"Green thumb" is an idiom that describes someone who has a special ability to keep plants healthy and growing. For example, "My sister has a green thumb, but I kill most plants that I buy". The phrase origin is unknown, but it's thought to have become popular in the early 1900s. One theory is that it comes from the green look that can appear on the fingers of people who work with plants, due to chlorophyll and plant materials getting on their skin and under their nails. The British equivalent of "green thumb" is "green fingers". When growing plants, it's important to be patient, as results can take time. Most plants grow over weeks or months, but some plants, like jade, only grow a few inches per year, and perennials may not bloom until their second year. When buying a plant, it's important to learn about the conditions it needs to thrive, such as how much sunlight it needs. Do you have a green thumb? Do you like to plant and grow plants, herbs, and food? Me... absolutely!
