Many colleges and high schools refused to recognize American Sign Language as a foreign language. In 1986, only 1% of American High Schools offered American Sign Language classes as a foreign language credit. They are viewed as a derivative of English, not a language in its own right. I hope this will be resolved so that the deaf and hard of hearing sign language is recognized as a language and not some hand movement. The deaf and HOH have struggled to be heard and seen. We are in the year of 2024 , it's time to move forward and stop letting history stop the clock on all language barriers, especially the deaf and hoh, It has been going on way too long! The majority does not have the rights to any languages. We all live on this earth and we all want to be a part of a greater community and help it grow on a richter scale. Don't you think so? If the roles were reversed?? Think about this.... Can you imagine if this was a deaf / hoh / DA (disabled) world and we stopped hearing people from using and recognizing their speech language as we deprived them of it?! Would you do anything to make sure they were heard and seen, right??? I would think they would do anything!!! That is what we are doing.... TO BE HEARD AND SEEN! So next time you see someone using ASL or BSL or ISL... remember that it is their language and they should be treated as such beings and be accepted for their true language.
